My text has a clear message and purpose. I will elaborate upon what goals the author is trying to accomplish, what goals they definitely are not trying to accomplish, and how the author personalizes their message.

Relevant Goals

  • Advocate for change
    • The author wants to change the taboo on religious materials in school libraries
  • Persuade an audience of something
    • The author attempts to persuade the audience that religious / spiritual texts are key to the development of adolescents
  • Inform the reader about a topic that is often misunderstood
    • The author wants to dispel the notion that religious books in school should be banned, and seeks to show us what those books really look like

Irrelevant Goals

  • Respond to a particular occasion or text
    • This is written about an issue at large, not an event or text

Nuances and Layers

  • Within a rigid / resistant system
    • The author is arguing a point that goes against the majority of views of parents - the people who hold power over schools and how their children are educated
