Those kinds of books: religion and spirituality in young adult literature is the source that I have chosen to base my second project on. Today I will analyze this text for cultural messages.

Cultural Keywords

  • spirituality
    • The author uses this word throughout the text, and sets up the author's argument that spirituality and religion is everywhere and shouldn't be ignored by school libraries
  • taboo
    • This word represents the current views that many school libraries have concerning religious books
  • library
    • Libraries are the subject and potential audience of this text

Thesis

The author's thesis is that opportunities for kids to encounter religious texts provide them with a more complete and open perspective of themselves; these books can help young adults discover who they are as individuals. School libraries need to end the taboo on books with religious content.
